Claddagh

Origins of the Claddagh

Legend has it that the Claddagh symbol was originated by Richard Joyce, an Irish seafarer, kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery in North Africa where he learned the art of goldsmithing. On his release he returned to his native village of Claddagh nestled outside the walls of Galway city on the west coast of Ireland. There he became a master goldsmith and created the Claddagh design that for centuries was used as a wedding ring by the local fisher folk.

This traditional Claddagh emblem composed of a crowned heart supported by two hands still endures today as a symbol of love, loyalty and friendship, Depending on how the Claddagh rings are worn they are used as wedding, engagement or friendship rings. As a wedding ring, it is worn on the left hand, with the heart pointed inward. As an engagement ring, it is worn on the right hand, with the heart pointing inward; for friendship, it is worn on the right hand, heart turned outward.

Claddagh

Taking the essence of the Claddagh emblem I have translated this evocative image into more natural, elegant lines.
